How Much Does a Website Cost in India? The Honest Answer

A website in India can cost 15 thousand rupees or 50 lakh. Both prices are real. Here is what you are actually paying for, where the money goes, and how not to get ripped off.

“How much does a website cost?”

It is the most common question we get, and it is the one question every agency dodges. They say “it depends” and then send you a form with fourteen fields.

So let us actually answer it. Website development cost in India ranges from about fifteen thousand rupees to well over fifty lakh. Both of those numbers are real. Both of those clients were probably happy. The difference is what they were buying.

Here is the breakdown, with no sales pitch in the middle.

Why the range is so wide

Asking what a website costs is like asking what a vehicle costs. A second hand scooter and a new Innova are both vehicles. They both get you from A to B. Nobody is confused about why the prices are different.

Websites are the same, except most people cannot see the engine, so they cannot tell a scooter from an Innova until something breaks on the highway.

The price of a website depends on five things.

  • What it has to do. Show information, collect leads, sell products, run a business process, or all of these.
  • How custom it is. A template with your logo on it, or a design built around your brand and your customers.
  • What it is built on. WordPress, Shopify, Webflow, or a fully custom stack.
  • Who builds it. A freelancer, a small studio, a large agency, or an in house team.
  • What happens after launch. Hosting, maintenance, updates, security, and ongoing improvements.

Rough price bands in India

These are ballpark numbers based on what we see in the market. Your mileage will vary, but if a quote is wildly outside these ranges, ask why.

Basic template site: 15,000 to 60,000 rupees. Five to eight pages, an off the shelf theme, your content dropped in. Good for a local business that needs to exist on Google. Do not expect it to win design awards or move serious numbers.

Custom designed business website: 1.5 lakh to 6 lakh. Proper design built around your brand, a handful of page templates, a CMS so your team can edit things, basic SEO setup, decent speed. This is where most growing startups and serious service businesses should be.

E-commerce on Shopify or WooCommerce: 2 lakh to 12 lakh. Custom theme, product pages that actually sell, integrations with payments, shipping, reviews, WhatsApp, CRM. The range depends heavily on catalogue size and how many custom features you need.

Custom web app or platform: 10 lakh to 50 lakh and up. Logins, dashboards, bookings, marketplaces, anything with real business logic. At this point you are building software, and software is priced by the team and the months.

Where the money actually goes

When you pay for a proper website, you are not paying for “coding.” You are paying for a sequence of decisions, and good decisions are expensive because they save you from very expensive mistakes.

Strategy and structure. Who is this for, what should they do, what pages do we need, how do they connect. Skipping this is how you end up with a 40 page site where nobody can find the pricing.

Content. The most underrated line item. Most website projects get delayed because the client is “still working on the copy.” Good sites are built on good words. Budget for a writer, or budget for a long delay.

Design. Not just how it looks. How it reads, how it flows on a phone, how it guides someone to the button. This is where a template site and a real site feel completely different.

Development. Turning the design into a fast, accessible, stable site that your team can edit without calling a developer every time they want to change a comma.

Integrations. Forms that go to your CRM, analytics that actually track, payments, WhatsApp, email tools. Each one is small. Together they are real work.

Testing and launch. Checking it on real phones, fixing the weird Safari bug, setting up redirects so you do not lose your old Google rankings. Boring. Critical.

The hidden costs nobody mentions

Here is where people get burned.

  • Hosting. Cheap shared hosting is a few thousand a year. Good managed hosting is more. If your site is slow, cheap hosting is often why.
  • Premium plugins and apps. Shopify apps and WordPress plugins charge monthly. Ten of them at a few hundred to a few thousand rupees each adds up quickly.
  • Maintenance. Updates, backups, security patches, small fixes. Either pay someone monthly or accept that the site will slowly rot.
  • Content updates. New pages, new campaigns, new landing pages. A website is never done.
  • Redoing it. The most expensive hidden cost of all is the cheap site you have to throw away in 18 months.

Freelancer, studio or agency?

There is no universally right answer. There is a right answer for your stage.

Freelancers are great for small, well defined sites where you know exactly what you want. Cheaper, faster, very personal. The risk is that one person is doing strategy, design, dev and support, and when they get busy or disappear, so does your website.

Small studios are the sweet spot for most growing brands. A small team with a designer, a developer and someone who thinks about the business. More reliable than a solo freelancer, more flexible and hands on than a big agency.

Large agencies make sense when you need scale, compliance, big integrations, and lots of stakeholders managed. You pay for the process and the account managers. Sometimes that is worth it.

Whoever you choose, look at the work they have actually shipped and talk to one of their past clients. A portfolio of mockups is not the same as a portfolio of live sites.

How to not get ripped off

A few rules we would tell a friend.

  • Own your stuff. Domain, hosting, CMS logins, code repository. All in your name. If an agency refuses, walk away.
  • Get a written scope. Pages, features, revisions, timeline, what is not included. Vague scopes are how five lakh becomes nine.
  • Ask what happens after launch. Who fixes things? How fast? How much?
  • Do not pick on price alone. The cheapest quote and the most expensive quote are both suspicious. Understand why they are different.
  • Ask about speed and SEO upfront. A beautiful site that loads in eight seconds and has no meta tags is a very pretty brochure in a locked drawer.

What about apps?

People often ask about app development cost in India in the same breath. The short version is that apps cost more because you are building for multiple platforms, you need a backend, and you have to go through store reviews. A simple app with a few screens and a basic backend can start around 5 to 8 lakh. Anything with real time features, payments, and complex user flows quickly moves into 20 lakh and beyond.

Before you build an app, ask whether a fast mobile website would do the job. For a lot of businesses, it absolutely would, for a third of the cost.

The unfiltered answer

A website costs whatever it takes to do the job you need it to do. If the job is “exist on Google,” spend very little. If the job is “sell crores of product” or “make us look like the obvious choice in our category,” spend properly, because your website is doing the work of a sales team that never sleeps.

The mistake is not spending too much or too little. The mistake is not knowing what job you are hiring the website to do.

If you want an honest number for your specific site, we do that. See how we build websites and apps, then tell us what you need. We will give you a real range, not a form with fourteen fields.
