Local SEO is the work of getting your business to show up when people nearby search for what you sell. Think “cafe near me”, “CA in Andheri”, “AC repair Whitefield” or “best biryani in Hyderabad”. For those searches, Google usually shows a map with three businesses on it, called the local pack or map pack, above the regular results. Local SEO is how you get into that box, and into Google Maps itself.
So what is local SEO, in practice? It comes down to four things: a complete, active Google Business Profile, a steady flow of genuine reviews, consistent business details across the internet, and a website with pages built for the places you serve. Google says it ranks local results on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence. You cannot move your shop, but you can do a lot about the other two.
Local SEO for businesses like clinics, salons, restaurants, showrooms, coaching centres and gyms is often the cheapest customer acquisition channel available. The people searching are close, ready, and frequently call within minutes. Here is the playbook we use.
What is local SEO, and how is it different from regular SEO?
Regular SEO is about ranking web pages for searches anywhere. Local SEO is about ranking a business for searches with local intent, whether the searcher types a place name or not. Google knows that “dentist” typed on a phone in Koramangala means a dentist in Koramangala.
| Factor | Regular SEO | Local SEO |
|---|---|---|
| Main asset | Your website | Your Google Business Profile, plus your website |
| Where you rank | Organic results | Map pack, Google Maps, and local organic results |
| Key signals | Content, links, technical health | Relevance, distance, prominence, reviews, consistent details |
| Competition | Anyone in the country or world | Businesses near the searcher |
| Typical result | A website visit | A call, a direction request, a walk in, a WhatsApp message |
The last row matters. A lot of local SEO success never shows up as website traffic. Someone sees your profile, taps call, and books. That is why you measure it differently, which we cover below.
How Google ranks local results
Google publicly names three factors for local ranking.
- Relevance. How well your profile matches the search. Your categories, services, description and reviews all feed this.
- Distance. How far you are from the searcher, or from the location in the search.
- Prominence. How well known and trusted you are. Reviews, ratings, mentions around the web, links, and your website’s general strength all count.
Distance is the one you cannot fake, and you should not try. Prominence is where most of the work, and most of the advantage, lives. A well reviewed business with a strong profile often outranks a closer competitor that neglected theirs.
Step 1: Set up your Google Business Profile properly
Your Google Business Profile, which used to be called Google My Business, is the single most important local SEO asset. Most Indian businesses have one. Most are half filled.
Claim and verify
Search for your business on Google or Maps. If a listing exists, claim it. If not, create one at Google Business Profile. Verification methods vary by business and change over time, and many businesses are now asked to record a short video showing the location, signage and proof of operation. Have your signboard, shop interior and a document like a GST certificate or utility bill ready.
Fill every field that applies
- Business name. Your real name, exactly as on your signboard. Do not add keywords. “Sharma Dental Clinic” is fine. “Sharma Dental Clinic Best Dentist Implants Root Canal Pune” breaks Google’s guidelines and can get you suspended.
- Primary category. The most important choice on the profile. Pick the most specific category that describes your core business, like “Cosmetic dentist” rather than just “Dentist” if that is truly what you do. Look at which categories your top ranking competitors use.
- Secondary categories. Add the other genuine services, but do not pile on irrelevant ones.
- Address or service area. If customers visit you, show the address. If you go to customers, like a pest control or home salon business, set a service area and hide the address. Virtual offices and unstaffed co-working desks are not eligible.
- Phone number. A local or mobile number that is actually answered. Missed calls are lost customers.
- Website. Link to the most relevant page, usually the homepage or a dedicated location page.
- Hours. Including special hours for Diwali, Eid, Christmas and other holidays. Nothing kills trust faster than a customer arriving at a closed shutter.
- Services and products. List them with short descriptions and prices or starting prices where possible.
- Description. Plain, specific language on who you serve and what you do. Mention your area naturally.
- Attributes. Wheelchair accessible, women owned, online appointments, and so on, where they apply.
Add photos, and keep adding
Upload real photos: the storefront so people can recognise it from the road, the interior, the team, your work, your products. Add new ones regularly. Profiles with fresh, real photos look alive. Stock images look like a front.
Post updates
Google lets you publish updates, offers and events on your profile. They will not transform rankings alone, but they show activity and give searchers a reason to choose you. Once or twice a week is plenty: a new menu item, a monsoon offer, a finished project.
Step 2: Build a review engine
Reviews are a major prominence signal and the first thing most people read. In India, where many buyers check ratings before even calling, a 3.6 star rating next to a 4.7 competitor is a quiet disaster.
Here is how to get more genuine reviews without breaking rules.
- Ask at the moment of happiness. Right after a successful treatment, a delivered order, a finished haircut. Not three weeks later.
- Make it one tap. Get your review link from your profile and turn it into a QR code at the counter, a link in your WhatsApp follow up message, and a line on the invoice.
- Ask everyone, not just happy customers. Google’s policies prohibit selectively asking only satisfied customers, and offering discounts or gifts in exchange for reviews.
- Never buy reviews or post fake ones. Google detects patterns, removes reviews, and can restrict profiles. It also tends to happen just when you need the profile most.
- Reply to every review. Thank good ones by name and mention what they bought. Reply to bad ones calmly, take the issue offline, and fix it if it is real. Future customers read the replies more than you think.
- Encourage specifics. “Ask them to mention the service they used” is fine. Reviews that name services and areas add relevance.
A simple WhatsApp template works well: “Thank you for visiting us today. If you were happy with the service, a quick Google review helps other people find us: [link]. And if anything was not right, just reply here and we will fix it.”
Step 3: Get your NAP consistent everywhere
NAP stands for name, address and phone number. Google cross checks your details across the web. If Justdial says one phone number, your website another, and your Facebook page has your old address from 2019, Google is less confident about you, and so are customers.
Pick one exact format and use it everywhere. Decide on details like “Shop No. 4, Ground Floor” versus “Shop 4”, and stick to it. Then fix the listings that matter.
| Platform | Who it matters for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Everyone | The priority, by far |
| Justdial | Most local services and retail | Still widely used, especially in tier 2 and 3 cities |
| Sulekha | Home services, education, professional services | Lead focused, often paid |
| IndiaMART | B2B, manufacturers, wholesalers | Essential for many B2B categories |
| Practo | Doctors, dentists, clinics | Patients compare here directly |
| Zomato and Swiggy | Restaurants and cafes | Ratings here shape reputation too |
| Facebook and Instagram | Most consumer businesses | Keep the address, phone and hours updated |
| Bing Places and Apple Business Connect | Everyone | Small but free, and they feed other maps and assistants |
| Mappls (MapmyIndia) | Everyone | Used in some navigation and enterprise products |
You do not need to be on two hundred directories. You need to be accurate on the twenty that matter for your category, starting with the ones above. Listings that customers in your industry actually use beat a bulk submission package every time.
Step 4: Build local pages on your website
Your profile does the heavy lifting in the map pack, but your website still supports relevance and prominence, and it ranks in the local organic results right below the map.
- One page per location. If you have branches in Indiranagar, HSR Layout and Jayanagar, each gets its own page with its own address, phone, hours, embedded map, photos, team, directions and reviews from that branch. Not the same text with the area name swapped.
- One page per core service. “Root canal treatment in Pune” deserves its own page with process, price range, FAQs and a booking button.
- Put NAP in the footer, matching your profile exactly.
- Add LocalBusiness schema markup with your name, address, phone, hours and geo coordinates. It helps search engines read the details reliably.
- Make it fast on mobile. Most local searches happen on phones, often on patchy connections. A slow page turns a ready customer into a bounce.
- Add click to call and WhatsApp buttons. That is how many Indian customers prefer to make contact.
If you are planning a new site to support this, our guide to website development cost in India will help you budget for it.
Step 5: Earn local prominence
Prominence grows when the wider web talks about you. Some practical ways to earn it locally:
- Get featured in local news sites, city blogs and neighbourhood Instagram pages.
- Sponsor or host local events, college fests, society events or charity drives that link to you.
- Partner with complementary businesses: a gym and a physiotherapist, a wedding planner and a decorator.
- Join industry associations and chambers of commerce that list members online.
- Work with local creators and food or lifestyle pages who will tag and mention you.
The same signals help you show up in AI answers when someone asks an assistant for a recommendation nearby. We cover that in GEO full form in SEO.
A worked example: a salon in Ahmedabad
Say a salon in Satellite, Ahmedabad, has a profile with 40 reviews at 4.1 stars, a generic “Beauty salon” category, five photos from opening day, and a website with one page. It does not appear in the map pack for “hair spa satellite ahmedabad”.
Here is what a first 90 days could look like:
- Week 1. Fix the name, check the primary category, add secondary categories like “Hair salon” and “Nail salon” if they apply, list every service with starting prices, update hours, upload 30 real photos.
- Week 2. Create a QR code and a WhatsApp review message. Train staff to ask every client at checkout. Reply to all 40 existing reviews.
- Weeks 3 to 4. Fix NAP on Justdial, Facebook, Instagram and the website. Claim Bing Places and Apple Business Connect.
- Month 2. Build service pages for hair spa, keratin, bridal makeup and nail art, each with prices, photos and FAQs. Add LocalBusiness schema.
- Month 3. Partner with two local wedding planners and a fashion boutique for mentions and links. Post two profile updates a week.
We would not promise a ranking. Nobody honest can. But in our experience, a business that works through a plan like this usually sees calls and direction requests rise noticeably within a few months, and the review count keeps compounding long after.
How to measure local SEO
- Google Business Profile performance. Calls, website clicks, direction requests, bookings and the search terms people used to find you.
- Local rankings. Rankings differ street by street, so use a local rank tracking tool that checks positions across a grid around your location, not just one spot.
- Reviews. Count, average rating and how often new ones arrive.
- Call tracking and enquiry source. Ask every new customer how they found you. “Google Maps” is a real answer.
- Website conversions from local pages. Track form fills, calls and WhatsApp clicks.
Also watch for impressions climbing while clicks lag. That is often more zero click behaviour, not failure, which we unpack in why your SEO impressions are rising while clicks are falling.
What local SEO costs in India
You can do a lot of local SEO yourself for free. The profile, reviews and basic listings cost time, not money. If you hire help, here are typical ranges in our experience.
| Option | Typical cost | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | Free, plus a few hours a week | Single location businesses with time and discipline |
| Freelancer | 8,000 to 25,000 rupees a month | Profile management, listings, basic posts |
| Agency, single location | 20,000 to 60,000 rupees a month | Profile, reviews system, local pages, content, reporting |
| Agency, multi location | 60,000 rupees to a few lakh a month | Chains, franchises and brands with many branches |
Be wary of anyone guaranteeing the number one spot, selling hundreds of directory submissions, or offering reviews. Those are signs of shortcuts that end badly.
Local SEO mistakes to avoid
- Stuffing keywords into your business name.
- Using a virtual office address to appear in a more competitive area.
- Creating duplicate profiles for the same location.
- Ignoring negative reviews, or arguing with them in public.

- Sending all local traffic to a generic homepage.
- Setting it up once and never touching it again.

FAQ
What is local SEO in simple words?
Local SEO is making your business show up when people nearby search for what you offer, especially in Google’s map results. It mostly involves your Google Business Profile, reviews, consistent business details and location focused pages on your website.
How long does local SEO take to show results?
Fixing an incomplete profile can show improvement within weeks. Building enough reviews, consistent listings and authority to compete in a crowded area usually takes three to six months of steady work. Highly competitive categories in big metros can take longer.
Is local SEO useful for businesses without a shop?
Yes. Service area businesses, like plumbers, home tutors, pest control or home salons, can set a service area on their Google Business Profile and hide the address. They compete in local results for the areas they serve, as long as they genuinely serve customers there.
Does Justdial still matter for local SEO in India?
For many categories, yes. It is still used directly by customers, particularly in smaller cities, and it is one of the places where your business details should be accurate. Treat it as a customer channel and a consistency signal, but remember Google Business Profile matters far more for Google rankings.
Can I rank in multiple areas of a city?
Distance limits how far a single location can rank in the map pack, so one branch will not usually dominate a whole metro. You can extend reach with strong location and service pages, more reviews and prominence, and of course by opening real branches. Fake addresses to appear in other areas break Google’s guidelines.
Get found by the people already looking
Local SEO is not glamorous. It is photos, replies, phone numbers, categories and a lot of polite asking for reviews. But the people searching are already nearby and already want what you sell. Showing up for them is about as close to free money as marketing gets.
