What is digital marketing? It is everything you do to find, persuade and keep customers through a screen. Google search, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, email, marketplaces like Amazon and Flipkart, and your own website. If a customer meets you on a phone or a laptop before they pay you, that meeting was digital marketing, whether you planned it or not.
The longer answer is that digital marketing is not one thing. It is a set of channels that each do a different job. Some help people discover you. Some convince them you are worth trusting. Some close the sale. Some bring them back for a second order. Most businesses fail at digital marketing not because they pick the wrong channel, but because they expect one channel to do all four jobs.
This guide is for business owners, not marketers: what comes under digital marketing, how each channel works with Indian examples, how the funnel fits together, and how to start on a budget you can afford.
Digital marketing in one picture
A customer’s journey is four questions they ask in their head.
- Who are you? (Awareness)
- Should I care? (Consideration)
- Should I buy now? (Conversion)
- Should I come back? (Retention)
A hoarding or a newspaper ad mostly answers the first question and hopes for the best. Digital marketing can answer all four, and it can measure which answer is working. That is the real difference. Not that it is cheaper or trendier. That it is measurable, targetable, and you can change it tomorrow morning.
What comes under digital marketing
Here are the main channels. You do not need all of them. You need the two or three that match where your customers already spend time.
1. Search engine optimisation (SEO)
SEO is getting your website to show up when people search on Google for things you sell or problems you solve. Someone in Pune types “best physiotherapist near me” or “how to fix lower back pain at desk job.” If your clinic shows up, that is SEO working.
It is slow. Three to six months before you see meaningful results is normal, sometimes longer in competitive categories. But once it works, the traffic keeps coming without you paying per click. It now also includes showing up inside AI answers on ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews, which we cover in our guide to GEO in SEO.
2. Search ads (Google Ads)
Search ads put you at the top of Google results for chosen keywords, and you pay when someone clicks. It is the closest thing to buying intent directly. Someone searching “CA for GST filing in Bengaluru” is ready to hire. You just paid to be the first name they see.
It works fast. It also stops the moment you stop paying.
3. Social media marketing
Your organic presence on Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and wherever your audience hangs out. It builds familiarity and trust over time. For most D2C brands, Instagram is the shop window. For most B2B companies, LinkedIn is where the founder’s posts do more work than the company page. We break down the work involved in what a social media marketing agency does.
4. Social ads (Meta, LinkedIn, YouTube)
Paid ads on social platforms. Unlike search ads, people are not looking for you. You are interrupting their scroll, so the creative has to earn the stop. Meta ads (Facebook and Instagram) are the workhorse for most Indian D2C brands because the reach is huge and the targeting is strong. LinkedIn ads cost much more per click but reach decision makers, which can make sense for high ticket B2B.
5. Content marketing
Guides, videos, newsletters and templates that are actually useful. Content feeds SEO, social and your sales team. You are reading some right now.
6. Email and WhatsApp marketing
Messages to people who have already given you permission. Order updates, new launches, restock alerts, offers, useful tips. In India, WhatsApp Business often beats email on open rates by a distance, especially for D2C and local businesses, because that is where people actually read messages. Email still matters for B2B and for longer content. Both are cheap per message and great for repeat sales.
7. Influencer and creator marketing
Paying or partnering with creators to talk about your product to their audience. It borrows trust you have not earned yet. In India, nano and micro creators in regional languages are often better value than big names. Our influencer marketing guide covers how to pick, brief and pay them.
8. Marketplace marketing
If you sell on Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Nykaa or Blinkit, the marketplace is a search engine with its own ads and ranking rules. Sponsored listings, good images and reviews decide who sells. Many Indian D2C brands make most of their revenue here.
9. Your website and landing pages
Every channel above sends people somewhere: your website, a landing page, or a WhatsApp chat. If that destination is slow, confusing or unconvincing, every rupee you spent to get the click leaks out. The website is not a channel. It is the bucket. Fix the holes before you pour more water in.
10. Analytics and tracking
Google Analytics, Meta’s pixel and Conversions API, UTM links, a simple CRM. Without tracking, you are not doing digital marketing. You are doing digital hoping.
What is digital marketing, explained with examples
Definitions are easy. Here is how it looks in three real world shaped scenarios. These are illustrative, not client stories.
A D2C skincare brand in Mumbai. They post Reels on Instagram showing real skin results and ingredient explainers (social media). They run Meta ads to new audiences using the Reels that performed best organically (social ads). They send a WhatsApp message when a customer’s 30 day supply is about to run out (retention). They list on Nykaa and Amazon and run sponsored listings there (marketplace). Search ads only on their brand name, so competitors cannot steal people already looking for them.
A B2B logistics software company in Gurugram. The founder posts on LinkedIn three times a week about warehouse problems (social). The team publishes detailed guides like “how to reduce RTO in ecommerce” (content plus SEO). They run Google search ads on high intent keywords like “warehouse management software India” (search ads). They send a monthly email to leads who downloaded a guide but have not booked a demo (email). Sales cycles are long, so the job is staying visible for months, not winning one click.
A dental clinic in Jaipur. A properly filled Google Business Profile with photos, timings and lots of genuine reviews (local SEO). Google search ads for “dentist near me” and “root canal cost Jaipur” within a 5 km radius (search ads). A few Instagram posts a week with before and after cases, done with patient consent (social). WhatsApp reminders for check ups (retention). No podcast, no influencer, and it works, because it matches what patients do before booking.
Notice that nobody is doing everything. Each business picked the channels where their customers already are.
Channels compared at a glance
| Channel | Best for | Speed to results | Typical starting cost per month | Stops when you stop paying? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SEO | Long term traffic, trust | Slow, 3 to 6 months plus | 25,000 to 1.5 lakh rupees | No, it compounds |
| Google search ads | Capturing ready buyers | Fast, days | 30,000 rupees plus ad spend | Yes |
| Meta ads | D2C sales, reach, leads | Fast, days to weeks | 30,000 rupees plus ad spend | Yes |
| LinkedIn ads | High ticket B2B | Medium | 50,000 rupees plus ad spend | Yes |
| Organic social | Familiarity, community | Slow to medium | 20,000 to 1.5 lakh rupees | Mostly |
| Content marketing | SEO, sales support | Slow | 20,000 to 1 lakh rupees | No |
| Email and WhatsApp | Repeat sales | Fast | 2,000 to 20,000 rupees in tools | Mostly |
| Influencers | Borrowed trust, launches | Fast to medium | 10,000 rupees to many lakhs | Yes |
| Marketplaces | Sales where buyers already shop | Medium | Varies with commission and ads | Partly |
These are typical ranges in our experience for small and mid sized Indian businesses, covering tools, freelancers or agency fees. They are not quotes. Ad spend is on top for paid channels.
The funnel: how the pieces fit together
The biggest mistake we see is treating every channel as a sales channel. A Reel will not make a stranger buy a 40,000 rupee mattress. It can make them remember your name when they search for one next week.
Here is a simple way to map channels to jobs.
| Funnel stage | What the customer is thinking | Channels that do this job | What to measure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Awareness | “Never heard of you.” | Reels, YouTube, influencers, broad Meta ads | Reach, views, follower growth, branded search |
| Consideration | “Okay, but are you any good?” | Content, reviews, retargeting ads, SEO, LinkedIn posts | Site visits, time on page, saves, enquiries |
| Conversion | “Should I buy now?” | Search ads, landing pages, offers, WhatsApp chat | Leads, sales, cost per acquisition |
| Retention | “Should I come back?” | WhatsApp, email, loyalty, good service | Repeat rate, lifetime value, referrals |
If you only spend on conversion, you run out of people to convert. If you only spend on awareness, you get famous and broke. A healthy plan has something at every stage, weighted towards where your current leak is.
How to do digital marketing: a step by step plan
Here is the process we would follow if we were starting from zero.
Step 1: Write down one goal and one number. “More visibility” is not a goal. “Get 60 qualified enquiries a month at under 800 rupees each” is a goal. “Hit 10 lakh rupees in monthly online sales by March” is a goal. The number decides everything else.
Step 2: Know your unit economics. What is your average order value? What is your margin? How many leads turn into customers? If your product makes 400 rupees profit per sale, you cannot pay 700 rupees to acquire a customer unless they buy again. Do this maths before you spend a rupee on ads.
Step 3: Describe your customer in one paragraph. Who are they, where do they live, what do they search for, what do they scroll, what makes them hesitate?
Step 4: Fix the destination first. Your website or landing page should load fast on a cheap Android phone on 4G, explain what you sell in five seconds, show proof, and make the next step obvious. If you are unsure what good looks like, read why landing page design is an argument.
Step 5: Set up tracking. Google Analytics 4, Google Search Console, your Meta pixel and Conversions API, UTM links on everything you share, and a simple spreadsheet or CRM for leads. One afternoon of setup saves months of guessing.
Step 6: Pick two channels, not seven. One that captures demand (usually Google search ads or SEO) and one that creates demand (usually Instagram, YouTube or LinkedIn). Get them working before adding more.
Step 7: Run small tests for four to six weeks. Test a few ad creatives, a few offers, a few audiences. Kill what does not work. Double what does. Expect most tests to fail. That is normal, not a disaster.
Step 8: Review every two weeks. Look at cost per lead or sale, conversion rate, and what customers say when they buy. Change one thing at a time so you know what caused the change.
Step 9: Add retention once sales start. WhatsApp and email flows for repeat purchase, reviews and referrals. Bringing back an old customer is usually far cheaper than finding a new one.
Step 10: Scale slowly. When a channel works, increase budget in steps, roughly 20 to 30 percent at a time, and watch whether results hold. Doubling overnight often breaks the thing that was working.
How much to budget for digital marketing in India
The question everyone asks first and nobody answers straight. Here is our honest version. These are typical monthly ranges in our experience, including ad spend, and they assume you already have a decent website.
Starter: 30,000 to 75,000 rupees a month. Good for local businesses and early stage brands. Roughly 20,000 to 50,000 rupees in ad spend on one platform, plus a freelancer or a lean setup for creative and management. Expect learning, not miracles.
Growing: 1 lakh to 4 lakh rupees a month. Two or three channels running together. Search plus Meta, a proper content calendar, SEO starting to compound, maybe a few creator collaborations. This is where most serious D2C and B2B brands in India operate.
Scaling: 5 lakh rupees a month and up. Multiple platforms, constant creative production, a full funnel with retargeting and retention, marketplace ads, and dedicated people or an agency team watching the numbers daily.
A simple split for a first year budget that we often suggest as a starting point:
- 50 to 60 percent on paid media (actual ad spend)
- 20 to 25 percent on creative (photos, videos, design, copy)
- 10 to 15 percent on SEO and content
- 5 to 10 percent on tools, tracking and testing
Adjust it once you have data. The right split is the one your numbers tell you.
Should you do it yourself or hire help?
Doing it yourself works when budgets are tight and you are learning. Freelancers work when you need one specific skill. An in house team makes sense when marketing is core and spend is high. An agency makes sense when you need strategy and execution across channels. Whoever you pick, ask how their work ties to revenue, not just clicks and followers. Our post on what a performance marketing agency should do has the questions to ask before you sign.
Digital marketing mistakes to avoid
- Boosting posts and calling it a strategy. The “Boost” button is convenient. It is rarely the best way to buy results. Use Ads Manager with a clear objective.
- Sending ad traffic to your homepage. Send people to a page that matches exactly what the ad promised.
- Changing everything every week. Ads need time and data to learn. Panic edits reset the learning and waste money.
- Ignoring creative. On social platforms, targeting is increasingly automated. The ad itself is now your main lever. If your ads feel tired, read why your ads are dying a slow, boring death.
- No tracking. If you cannot tell which channel brought a sale, you will end up cutting the one that was working.
- Forgetting existing customers. Most businesses spend almost everything on new customers and almost nothing on the ones who already trust them.
FAQ
What is digital marketing in simple words?
Digital marketing is promoting and selling your business using the internet. That includes Google search, social media, online ads, email, WhatsApp, marketplaces and your website. The big advantage over traditional marketing is that you can target specific people and measure exactly what is working.
What are the main types of digital marketing?
The main types are SEO, search ads, social media marketing, social ads, content marketing, email and WhatsApp marketing, influencer marketing, marketplace marketing, and analytics. Most businesses do not need all of them. Start with the two or three channels where your customers already spend time.
How much does digital marketing cost for a small business in India?
In our experience, a small business can start with roughly 30,000 to 75,000 rupees a month including ad spend. Growing brands typically spend 1 lakh to 4 lakh rupees a month across a few channels. The right budget depends on your margins and what a customer is worth to you over time.
How long does digital marketing take to show results?
Paid ads can bring leads or sales within days, though it usually takes a few weeks of testing to make them efficient. SEO and content typically take three to six months or more to build meaningful traffic. A good plan uses paid channels for quick results while organic channels build up in the background.
Can I do digital marketing myself?
Yes, especially at the start. Many founders learn Google Ads, Meta ads and Instagram themselves and do fine at a small scale. As spend grows, the cost of mistakes grows too, and that is usually when hiring specialists or an agency pays for itself.
Is digital marketing better than traditional marketing?
Not always better, but usually more measurable and more flexible. You can start small, target precisely and change things quickly. Traditional channels like outdoor, print and TV still work for mass awareness, and many strong brands use both together.
Where to go from here
Digital marketing is not a magic trick and it is not a mystery. It is choosing the right channels for your customers, sending them to a page that convinces, measuring honestly, and doing more of what works.
